Fitness vs Fatness - Back On The Treadmill

Hmm. Daily exercise and I still got fat over the summer here in the
Northwoods. I blame the pot-pies and cheese nachos. Swimming every day just
isn't enough, what with being over 50 and all. Back to Calif I go, back to
another round of MuscleBear wanna-be at the gym for months on end. I swear
this fat is going to MELT off me. Just like pot-pie gravy runs off a spoon
or like cheese drips down from piping hot nachos. I'll just MELT off the
fat!

Water-Rat-Bears

People seem to seem to be genetically encoded to either love swimming or hate it: Either strip down and dive in at any opportunity - or to merely observe from the dry safety of the pools edge or the terra-firma of the sandy beach. Either ya love the water like an otter - or hate it like a cat hates being thrown off the deep end.

Maybe modesty has something to do with this: Big hairy guys who just don't feel like taking their shirts off in general, let alone showing off their Fat 'N' Fur all glistening and matted down and wet in such public places. It's a shame really: 1. To not feel accepting or comfortable in one's own body such-as-it-is. Or, 2. To take advantage of the truly impact-free, full-body stretching and workout that swimming does like no other fitness activity. Or, 3. Not to know the freedom being a Speedo Bear can bring to your self image.

Me? I'm a WATER-RAT by nature, 100%. So even when I don't have the will to torture myself with ROUTINE activity like weight-lifting and aerobics implies - swimming remains the best all-round way to stay connected and aware of the rest of my clearly aging bones. It's summer. Get out there. DIVE IN!

Beef-Up Buff-Up Tough-Up - Belly Up To The Bar

If you were stranded on a desert island and could only have ONE piece of weight-training exercise gear - what would it be? Personally, I'd choose a SPRI 24lb. Body Bar w/Foam Padding.

4 feet long, dense as heck, and covered with no-slip grip dense foam - it's possible to do a total body workout routine: From deadlifts to squats to curls to presses, from head to toe. Available in weights up to 24 pounds... Oh you don't think that's very heavy? Set a workout timer to 30 minutes and schlep that weight around non-stop till ya puke : You'll get a great work-up-a-sweat work out!

Fit AFTER Fifty - Weight Training For The Aging Man

"Use it or lost it". Nothing seems more apt than for the aging Bear who starts to notice how rapidly the aging process starts to take hold once one hits their late 40's. It takes a redoubled effort (or you need to get one in the first place) to commit to weight-training as a core means of simply preserving existing metabolism - and counter the rapid decline in muscle-mass that aging implies.

Having read over 100+ fitness, exercise, diet, etc books over the years (thanks to a dirt-cheap second-hand bookstore in the neighborhood) few really stand out. Not just as a reference for weight-training's value in anti-aging -- but TURNING BACK THE CLOCK holds its own as the single most definitive book on exactly what you need to do, what you ought to be eating. A great read.

Shape Up - Or Ship Out : Starting Over Fitness

"FIT FOR LIFE" is a good motto. One many of us aspire to - and live by. We take time, we make time to integrate exercise into our daily routine -- and look and feel better for it. You're in the zone, you hit the groove, you're tight, you're taught, you're buff you're lookin' tuff......

And then you lose it. Life changes, you get sick and get a cold that derails your life for a week or 3, or you change jobs, or you move -- and you lose your groove. You lose your routine. You lose your COMMIT TO FIT. You gain weight. You get flabby. Your diet goes to hell. You buy the wrong foods, then eat them, cuz you bought them.

Help! I need to start over. I need to RE-Commit To Fit.
